CNT Slashes Cost of Transatlantic Data Replication

May 29, 2003

Dublin, Ireland – CNT® (Nasdaq: CMNT), the global specialist in information movement, and Hibernia Atlantic, part of Columbia Ventures Corporation, have announced a new international partnership that dramatically lowers the cost of deploying trans-Atlantic data replication solutions, linking the United Kingdom with Boston and New York, and beyond.

The need to guarantee continuity of operations on a global basis in the face of new and potentially large-scale threats is of highest concern to board members and shareholders of major corporations worldwide as well as to government regulators. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission White Paper on ‘Sound Practices to Strengthen the Resilience of the U.S. Financial System’ recommends business continuity and disaster recovery strategies that include longer distance data protection, and a recent ‘State of Britain’ Poll by Mori, showed nearly 50% of respondents believe a major terrorist attack on Britain is likely in the next 6 months, further raising fears around data security.

“CNT now makes it possible for companies with data centres on both sides of the Atlantic to manage all of their data replication as if they are in the same building,” said Mark Vargo, CNT’s Senior Vice President, Europe. “Integrating the Hibernia Atlantic service into our information movement solutions means that CNT is able to reduce circuit costs by up to 80%, making trans?Atlantic replication of mainframe and open systems environments, a viable way to meet the business continuity and recovery objectives of international companies with data centres in both the US and UK.”

CNT has already helped many companies replicate data between their international data centres for business continuity or data centre migration purposes. But, in the past, circuit costs of up to £100,000 per month forced companies to severely restrict application usage and compromise bandwidth. Now, it is possible to move corporate data across the Atlantic more cost-effectively than between London and Manchester.

“The new cost model enables a complete mindset change for the customer, opening up many new opportunities to improve data availability and business efficiency”, says Mike Higgins, Sales and Marketing Director, Hibernia Atlantic. “Mirroring critical business information between data centres in the UK and US is now a reality. At the same time, companies can also realise huge cost efficiencies by merging traditionally separate disciplines of Voice Telephony, Video and Data into a single unified information movement strategy”.

By making the same data available to UK and US staffs, many companies will benefit from collaborative ‘follow-the-sun’ trading to drive business efficiencies and reduce development times. Having a cost-effective way of making project data available on both sides of the Atlantic, means that US-based development staff can continue to work on a project after those working in the UK have gone home, extending the business day up to 18 hours.

“International companies are linking together data centres in the UK and US for data availability, collaborative working, or business continuity/disaster recovery. However, many cannot afford to manage the complexity, costs and potential risks associated with involving multiple storage suppliers and telcos. Instead, they are seeking a single trusted partner who can provide the complete storage network infrastructure,” said John McArthur, Group Vice President of Storage Research at IDC.

Add RecsetVargo went on: “CNT is already working with many companies to optimise the management, control and security of their information infrastructure within the walls of the data centres before they are networked together. Then we deploy the storage applications, such as disk mirroring, electronic tape vaulting, as well as remote clustering; size and provision the local loop connectivity and trans?Atlantic circuits and manage the entire end-to-end link via our 24x7 NOC (Network Operations Centre).”
